This is a self-release of two sine wave meditations composed and performed live over the course of 2016. The pieces explore binaural beats while investigating the harmonic spectrum of two different tonal centres.

The subtle detuning of the sine waves channelled separately to each ear results in a binaural beat, oscillating between 4 to 12hz. This range of frequencies has been correlated with alpha and theta brainwaves, associated with different states of thought or experience. Alpha brainwaves are often detectable in a state of relaxation, similar to the sensation one has before falling asleep, as well as during creative and artistic experiences. Most frequently, theta brainwaves occur when we’re dreaming but are also generated during deep meditation and while daydreaming.

I returned to listening to these meditations during quarantine, in search of bits of escapism, trying to focus or recenter my attention, an antidote, perhaps, to the flood of news and constant refreshing of feeds. Throughout the pieces, the drones shift between airy consonant sections to denser phases, which are at times dissonant, almost claustrophobic. Listening back to these pieces in light of the Covid-19 crisis, I felt that the work resonates, in ways, with the current situation and wanted to share this listening experience.

In order to experience the oscillations, it’s recommended to listen to the pieces through headphones.
